In a world of 15 second hyper-timelapse videos, I’ve decided to post a real-time painting which is over an hour long.
I’m such a rebel.
But more than that it’s my own personal push-back against the glamour that these hypnotising short videos have. They can make the process of creating seem smooth and straightforward. Uncertain hand movements look confident when sped up, and that makes for an unspoken, fundamental and maybe even off-putting lie about making art.
Don’t get me wrong – I love being hypnotised with art time-lapses as much as anyone else. But I also think we need to provide the counterbalance to that in the form of real-time painting videos too. It’s one of the things I love about Aine Divine’s channel on YouTube – it’s her raw creative process. There’s no slick video editing, sometimes her sound is wonky, but you get to see her real process. Her ups and downs, prolonged ‘ugly’ stages, her wonderings and ‘what do I do now?’ questioning. It’s all there and I find that very reassuring.
So if you’d like to have a look at a ‘quick’ one hour portrait that I made, it’s up on my YouTube channel or embedded below as one long video.
I originally made the video to provide some footage for one of my class trailers and this whole hour + painting ended up being about 5 seconds worth of footage. I’m happy to have rediscovered it and be able to share this as a real-time painting with you.
I hope you enjoy it and feel free to let me know if you’ve got any comments / feedback / suggestions for any other content you’d like to see on my channel (or this blog!)
