Hello friends, I wanted to let you know about an exhibition I am putting on called “Doris Small: A Retrospective”. This is a posthumous exhibition of my grandmother’s creative works and practice on what would have been her 94th birthday.
- Where: Leith Makers, 105 Leith Walk, Edinburgh
- When: Feb 18th – Mar 1st 2026
- Times: 11am – 5.30pm
Although Doris had to leave school in 1946 at the age of fourteen to enter domestic service, she pursued creative interests throughout her long life, producing work into her late eighties. She also shared her interest in the creative arts, teaching community arts and crafts classes for over forty years.
She was, what we could call today, a “multi-faceted creative”, working with watercolours, pencils, pastels, acrylics and oil paints. She designed and produced her own decoupage greetings cards. She cross-stitched wall hangings, knitted Fair Isle and Aran jumpers, and made soft toys that were sent all over the world.

A number of her original paintings will be on display, as well as a selection of her sketchbooks and works-in-progress that she used for teaching. The exhibition will also contain a selection of her original paper crafts, cross-stitched work, and photography of some of her soft toys.
Doris, pictured above, is standing next to one of her stunning watercolour landscapes. The painting depicts a river near where she lived, the Calder Water, as seen in Calderglen Country Park. A small number of high-quality reproductions of this painting will be available for sale, with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer’s Society.

There will be an ‘Opening Night’ style celebration of her life on her birthday, Friday, February 20th, from 7-9pm. All are welcome.
I hope you are able to come along, spend some time among Doris’ works, and celebrate her life with me.
